Side Mount License Plate

Wow! I love this mod! This is a side mount license plate I got off of Ebay for $149 with the "Buy It Now" option. It is made for Harleys and no one could tell me if it would fit a Honda or if they knew of anyone doing it.

This plate is designed to replace a spacer on the left side of the Harleys axle. Hondas have these on the right. I was going to try to cut the spacer down to fit this on the right side but the light was too big to fit between the tire and pipes anyhow. The Mount on this bracket was too fat to allow it on the left and be able to get the axle nut back on with any threads showing. So in the vice it went. Using a Hacksaw I cut the mounting plate by 2/3rds and using a cut off wheel ground away to shape the mount enough to fit around the final drive of the VT1100. See my drawing in the picture below.

The fit was perfect and left me one thread hanging out of the nut... not as much as I would have liked (minimal three) but it works. The assembly has not come loose and I did this mod before I went on my 2500 mile trip. I figured I could step on it every once in a while to check for tightness!

Next I used a plasma cutter to cut away the old license plate mounting bracket that used to cover a good portion of the rear tire. The grinder finished and excess that was left easily. This metal is thin and soft. Some black glossy Rustoleum paint and it was done.

I dressed the wire in a loom and ran it behind the shock and up to the seat where I easily tapped into the stock taillight harness. Now I have an additional running and brake LED light on the lower left side of my bike. I love the look of this light.

To top the look off, I ordered a tribal flame chrome accent from Aeromach (dotcom) for about $27. This looks sharp but don't get caught underneath it.. it is lethal! Here is the finished look...
