Stator Cover Powder Project

10/04/07

Haven't been working on Vicious much in the last few months but have been getting some good ride time
in with a trip to St Louis to meet with Graham from England, Bikes Blues and Bar-B-Que with Billy in Arkansas,
and then Kentucky to meet up with Brian and Sue and a whole horde or HSN members and local club riders for a
great weekend of camping.

So I decide to get a couple of projects done that I have had on my list. The first was swapping out
the horn which is in another page, and this stator cover. In the picture below the side cover is missing
the flamed cover whi9ch was claimed by the motorcycle gods in Oklahoma on my trip to St Louis.
Theres no purple down this side of the bike since I removed the purple breather tubes from
the last intake system I made. This stator cover is screaming for some paint.

Here is a shot after removing the chrome engine cover, clutch mechanism and starter gear covers.
There are a lot of bolts that need to come off to get this cover off, one  internal to the starter cover.

****WARNING*** The following pictures may be seen as graphic to some people!

A whack (few hard whacks) with a rubber mallet and the side cover pops off revealing the magneto and starter gears.
The wires seen in teh cover on the right are the ones that go to the charging circuit connectors under the seat. You know
The ones, they get hot and melt on a lot of these Hondas. They are permanently attached to the stator windings seen in
the next picture.

Remove the bolt hiding the retainer for the wires and slide the wire out of the cover. Remove the
three center bolts to remove the stator. The gasket has to be torn to remove the wires.

I clean off most of the gasket and move to the bead blast cabinet for cleaning the rest of the cover.

I blast the residue from the old emblem off and remove the clear coat from the rest of the cover.
Any remaining gasket material is easily removed by the glass bead.

Voila! Clean as a vissel!  Look how bright and shiny that thing is! Also shown is a set of carbs
I am powdercoating for the Cheese (CB750). That's another project!

After thoroughly cleaning the cover off, I start taping and plugging teh areas I do not want powdercoated.

Into the powder coating oven for a 20 minute bake with the candy purple powder (translucent so the
metal shines through it and looks anodized, imagine what it would look like on chrome!) and she
comes out looking fantastic with a coating that will not chip or easily scratch. Wow that's intense!

Back on the bike with a new gasket and here is how she looks! You could even get away without
a side cover emblem on there now! But I have other plans.

Here is a close up shot. I for the life of me cannot figure out what that is refecting in the chrome engine cover! lol

Here she is with a fresh side cover made by Bluey in Australia. I have mine chromed though as the polished
aluminum scratches and dulls way too easily.

One more shot of the side of the bike with the purple ring showing. I like it. Balances out since the clutch cover is
powder purple on the other side..

Thanks for reading.
